Why do books have a
peculiar smell ?
MY BOOK HAS THIS DIVINE AROMA |
Well I did a bit of searching around.
The reasons are
many, and a bit technical.
To keep things simple, I can tell you that the aroma
of books is due to compounds which constitute crushed wood .They exude vanillin, which smells like vanilla.
VANILLIN COMES FROM THE WOOD IN THE TREES |
Then there is something called benzaldehyde, which gives a fruity, almond-like odor.
On the other hand terpene
compounds impart a faintly, wooden odour to books.
“In a good book room you feel in some mysterious way that you are absorbing the wisdom contained in all the books through your skin, without even opening them.” - Mark Twain
There you are!
